The Secret Life of Walter Mitty

Directed by Norman Z. McLeod, with Danny Kaye, Roslind van Hoorn, Boris Karloff, Fay Bainter (1947). Walter Mitty, a daydreaming pulp-fiction writer with an overprotective mother and a grasping fiancée with a little spoiled dog that hates him, likes to imagine that he is a hero who experiences fantastic adventures. Each of his day dreams feature mechanizations that make the sound “tapucketa, tapucketa, tapucketa.” The milquetoast’s dream comes true when he accidentally meets a mysterious woman who hands him a little black book. According to her, it contains the locations of the Dutch crown jewels hidden since World War II. Soon he finds himself in the middle of a confusing conspiracy and has to admit that being a hero in real life isn't easy. Based on the story by James Thurber. Thurber is reported to have offered producer Samuel Goldwyn $10,000 not to film his classic short story. (110 min.)

Amarcord

Directed by Federico Fellini, with Pupella Maggio, Armando Brancia, Magali Noël, Cicco Ingrassia (Italy―1974). In this carnivalesque portrait of the provincial Italian city Rimini during the 1930s, Fellini’s most personal film satirizes his youth and turns daily life into a circus of social rituals, adolescent desires, male fantasies and political subterfuge, all set to Nina Rota’s classic, nostalgia-tinged musical score. Awarded an Oscar in 1975 for Best Foreign Language Film. In Italian with subtitles. (123 min.)
