The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Directed by Norman Z. McLeod, with Danny Kaye, Roslind van Hoorn, Boris Karloff, Fay Bainter (1947). Walter Mitty, a daydreaming pulp-fiction writer with an overprotective mother and a grasping fiancée with a little spoiled dog that hates him, likes to imagine that he is a hero who experiences fantastic adventures. Each of his day dreams feature mechanizations that make the sound tapucketa, tapucketa, tapucketa. The milquetoasts dream comes true when he accidentally meets a mysterious woman who hands him a little black book. According to her, it contains the locations of the Dutch crown jewels hidden since World War II. Soon he finds himself in the middle of a confusing conspiracy and has to admit that being a hero in real life isn't easy. Based on the story by James Thurber. Thurber is reported to have offered producer Samuel Goldwyn $10,000 not to film his classic short story. (110 min.)
